Typically practice will consist of athletes running two laps (800 meters) of the track when they arrive, a short team meeting and then drills as a team. This will take about 15 to 20 minutes. Then athletes will break into two groups by age and go to either field events or running events. After 45 minutes the groups will switch to the other area for another 45 minute session. If your son/daughter only wishes to do one or the other this is fine, but we do encourage them to try different events. So a typical practice schedule might look like this:
Athletes will run through a number of different events during the first two practices in order to get a feel for what if offered. The events will be:
Spring in Oregon can be unpredictable and athletes should come dressed appropriately for weather conditions of any type. It is always easier to remove layers than to not have them at all. Under most conditions, athletes will be in shorts and t-shirts or tights and t-shirts. However, a water resistant light-weight jacket and pants are a good idea, as well as a hat on some days. We will practice rain or shine.
Practice will always meet at the Sherwood Middle School, but from time to time coaches will take athletes as a group out for work on the roads or on hills away from the track. When they are away from the track they will stay as a group and always have a coach within the group.
